About Pastels ...
Pastels are a powdered pigment of pure colours that mixed with binders to become a solid stick of paint - And Not to be confused with 'School Board, Chalk!!' ....
they are something entirely different.
Pastels'....... have actually been around for hundreds of years.... look at the 'Masters' Monet & Degas to name but two, they used pastels - they are not what you would imagine, pastel in hue, they can be bold, vibrant, soft, muted, even given the impression of texture ..... fur.... pottery... truly a beautiful medium that can only be imagined from the representation in photos - they sparkle in real, they are alive, they breathe!!!.
Under a microscope the tiny fragments of Pastel Are a likened to diamonds, as have many facets, Which gives them their beauty of sparkle and hue. Changing in light source may bring out further colours that were previously hidden to the eye
Pastels are a beautiful medium not only to look at, but also to work with, that have the colours of oils, the quickness of watercolours - But Unlike Oils, Pastels Do Not fade or dull with age or yellow like Watercolours
As the Pastel Powder never actually sets, the surface should never be touched, nor sprayed with fixative even by a Professional Framer as this can cause the beautiful vibrancy of colour to dull. They can be handled safely by holding the Painting by the outer edges using finger tips. Mounts or Mats should be used to keep the surface away from the glass, as build up of static could cause the pastel be drawn like a magnet. For this reason Glass should always be used as less static is likely. Pastel paintings can be safely kept within the Glassine sheet that I send it in to you. A Slight Ghost image may be seen in part on the Glassine, this is quite natural, no need to worry as this is just the excess pastel dust.
You may choose to use a Professional Framer, but you can yourself simply put your painting into a Mat and Frame as you would any other picture - just ensure a tight fit to stop any movement.
Once Matted and Framed your Pastel Painting can stay that way for ever and a day and bring you a life time of pleasure and beyond.
